There are currently over 21 million Asian Americans and just like Goldbelly has shown that people love to buy and gift (and will pay a premium for) foods that remind them of a certain place, this would make both a fantastic gift, or something fun for your family just like a HelloFresh. While demand for this can and will obviously extend beyond the Asian community, it’s a non-negligible percent of the population. What about make your own Pocky, or mooncakes, or fortune cookies? The opportunities are endless. You could include other DIY Asian-inspired products that gain fame on social media like the raindrop cake that went viral a few years ago or the cloud bread that was all over TikTok in 2020. You could offer other Asian snacks that are hard to find in normal groceries as add ons to each package. Given the average boba drink at a shop costs ~$6, there is already a precedent for this being a premium product that can garner high prices so margins on this would be incredibly high for a DTC CPG product.ĭon’t stop at boba! On top of just boba, there are a ton of expansion opportunities. It then becomes both an activity as well as a treat.

Another variation of this would be to have a DIY boba kit that contained everything you need to make your own pearls at home. With the popularity of subscription boxes as well as DTC goods, I can see a DTC boba subscription that allows a customer to select from a variety of base powders that can be mixed with water or milk, and a package of bubbles being popular, especially during the remainder of the pandemic and as more people move away from cities and plan to work remotely. Just like a Starbucks habit, many people who drink boba do so frequently for others it’s more of a treat.

The drink originated in Taiwan in the 1980s and has become popularized across the US, especially in cities with larger Asian populations. The drink is served in large clear plastic cups with a think plastic film sealing the top that gets punctured by an oversized straw perfect to slurp up the bubbles. Boba, also known as bubble tea is composed of a tea base, often a sweetened and flavored milk tea, and pearls or bubbles made of tapioca.
